7 Tips to Keep Your Household Appliances in Good Condition

If taken care of, your household appliances can perform at an optimal level for a long period of time. However, many people are not aware of the small things we can do to ensure our most relied on appliances are properly maintained. Avoid unnecessary faults and costly energy bills with our top tips on looking after your domestic appliances.

  1. Don’t overload your washing machine – if your machine is too full when in use, the movement can cause damage to the agitator. To avoid this, only fill the drum ¾ of the way. Aim to wash the machine on an empty cycle every 2 week to avoid unpleasant odours and residue.

  2. Check your fridge’s air seals – keep energy bills low and food quality high by regularly checking the door of your fridge and the rubber gasket sealing in the cool air for possible damage that could lead to gas escaping, which could be increasing the power consumption of the fridge.

  3. Clean your dishwasher – take out the spray arm of your dishwasher and clean separately every few months for better performance of your dishwasher. You should also clean the filter if it is not self-cleaning, and occasionally use acids such as vinegar to remove build up and unpleasant smells.

  4. Open your oven door – clean the inside of your oven regularly to keep it in good working condition, as the leftover heat from cooking will harden food residue and make it harder to remove. You should also check for damage in the door to ensure there is no accidental loss of heat from cracks.

  5. Replace the vacuum belt – to ensure performance of your vacuum cleaner remains at an optimum level, replace the belt in your machine every 6 months. You should also change the bag regularly as when this is full the vacuum cleaner will spread dirt in areas that are already clean.

  6. Swap out your air conditioning filter – if your a/c unit uses disposable filters, these should be replaced on a regular basis. If it is reusable, clean the filter every 2-3 weeks to keep the air cool and electricity consumption low.

  7. Keep your TV cool – If your television is placed in a hot environment or the brightness is consistently kept on a high level, the lifespan can be severely reduced as the light emitters are going to exhaust quicker. Switch off your TV when not in use to avoid overheating.
